Asphalt Shingle Rejuvenation: What It Does to the Shingle
Asphalt shingle rejuvenation protects the shingles you still have, so a sound roof keeps working for more years.
Here is what actually happens to an asphalt shingle as it ages, what a treatment changes, and what no treatment can undo.

What Is Asphalt Shingle Rejuvenation?
Asphalt shingle rejuvenation is a treatment that coats aging asphalt shingles to protect them from the sun and water that wear them out, after any damaged shingles are repaired or replaced.
On our roofs, the asphalt shingle rejuvenator is applied as the last step of a roof tune-up. The roof is washed, the flashings and skylights are sealed, and damaged shingles are replaced before anything is sprayed.
That order matters. A treatment protects good shingles; it does not fix broken ones.
- Washes the roof so the treatment bonds to clean shingles
- Replaces shingles that are cracked, torn or missing
- Coats every slope, not only the worst ones
- Backed by a six-year warranty from Dura-Foam

Why Do Asphalt Shingles Get Brittle?
Asphalt shingles get brittle because years of heat and ultraviolet light dry out the asphalt, and dry asphalt loses the flexibility that lets a shingle bend without cracking.
A new shingle flexes with every hot afternoon and cool night. As the asphalt dries, that daily movement starts to crack it instead.
Southern California sun speeds this up, especially on south and west facing slopes. The same roof often looks fine on one side and tired on the other.
- Heat and sun dry the asphalt
- Dry shingles stop flexing
- Stiff shingles crack, curl and shed granules

Can Curling Shingles Be Restored?
Curling shingles cannot be flattened back to new by any spray, so badly curled shingles are replaced during the tune-up and the rest of the roof is treated to slow further curling.
Light curling at the edges is common on an older asphalt roof and does not always mean trouble. Shingles that have cupped or lifted enough to catch the wind are a leak risk and get replaced.
We will show you which is which at the free inspection, with photos from your own roof.

Does Shingle Rejuvenation Stop Granule Loss?
Shingle rejuvenation slows granule loss by coating the shingle and helping hold the granules that remain, but it cannot replace granules that have already washed off.
Granules shield the asphalt from the sun. Once a patch is bare, that part of the shingle ages quickly, which is why bare shingles are replaced rather than coated.
For the wider picture of what treatment does to a whole roof, see roof rejuvenation for worn asphalt shingles.
Which Shingle Brands Can Be Treated?
Any brand of asphalt shingle can be treated, including three-tab and architectural shingles, as long as the roof is still sound.
What decides it is condition, not the name on the bundle. A well-kept older roof from any maker can qualify, while a newer roof with storm damage may need repairs first.
- Three-tab asphalt shingles
- Architectural or dimensional asphalt shingles
- Any manufacturer, if the roof is structurally sound
How Do You Know If Shingles Can Still Be Saved?
You know shingles can still be saved when the roof deck is solid, most shingles are lying down and holding granules, and the damage is limited to spots that can be repaired.
A free inspection answers this for certain. We walk the roof, photograph what we find, and tell you plainly whether a tune-up makes sense.
If it does not, we say so. You can read where that line sits in roof restoration versus roof replacement.
- Good sign: the deck feels solid underfoot
- Good sign: damage is in patches, not everywhere
- Warning sign: soft spots or rot under the shingles
- Warning sign: shingles failing on every slope

Asphalt Shingle Rejuvenation FAQs
What is an asphalt shingle rejuvenator?
An asphalt shingle rejuvenator is a coating applied to aging asphalt shingles to protect them from sun and water. We apply ours after a full roof wash, with repairs included when the inspection shows they are needed.
Does shingle rejuvenation spray work on its own?
Shingle rejuvenation spray protects shingles that are still in good shape, but it cannot repair cracked or missing shingles. That is why our treatment includes repairs first.
Is there shingle rejuvenation near me?
We provide shingle rejuvenation across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and Ventura counties, starting with a free inspection at your home.
What is asphalt shingle roof treatment?
Asphalt shingle roof treatment is the washing, repair and coating of an aging shingle roof to keep it working for more years.
Why are my shingles brittle?
Shingles turn brittle because heat and ultraviolet light dry out the asphalt over the years, so they stop flexing and start to crack.
Can cracked asphalt shingles be treated?
Cracked asphalt shingles are replaced during the tune-up, and then the whole roof, new shingles included, is coated.
Does treatment change the color of my shingles?
Treatment leaves shingles looking clean and even, because the roof is washed first and coated evenly.
Will treatment work on architectural shingles?
Treatment works on architectural asphalt shingles and on three-tab asphalt shingles alike.
How long does asphalt shingle rejuvenation take?
Asphalt shingle rejuvenation takes two to three hours with a two-person crew, including the repairs.
How long does the treatment last?
The treatment is backed by a six-year warranty from Dura-Foam. See the six-year roof tune-up warranty for what it covers.
Can my shingles be too far gone?
Shingles can be too far gone when the deck is soft or shingles are failing across the whole roof. We tell you at the inspection if that is the case.
Do I need to be home for the treatment?
You do not need to be home for the treatment, though many homeowners like to see the photos we take before and after the work.
